Ron Paul: Secret Service protection ‘is a form of welfare’

Unlike the other GOP presidential candidates remaining in the race, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) explained Monday on NBC’s The Tonight Show why he doesn’t want Secret Service protection.

“It’s a form of welfare, having tax payers pay to take care of somebody,” he said. “I’m an ordinary citizen and I would think I should pay for my own protection.”

Jay Leno then played a clip of a kung fu movie in which the congressman’s head replaced a successful fighter’s, showing why he doesn’t need Secret Service protection.

Paul cited the exorbitant cost, estimating Secret Service protection added up to more than $50,000 a day per individual.

Paul also reiterated his support for emergency contraception and his opposition to abortion.
