President Obama’s signature on an executive order that updates presidential authority to take control over national defense resources in time of emergency has legal minds arguing over whether the White House is trying to expand power or merely organize rules 18 years in the making.
The executive order, signed late Friday, revokes an earlier order put in place by President Bill Clinton in 1994 and says any other previously issued orders or rulings by previous presidents shall remain in effect unless they are inconsistent with the new order.

The purpose of the …

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses…I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” These words, from poet Emma Lazarus, were inscribed on the Statue of Liberty over 100 years ago. Today the golden door has a lock on it, paid for with record profits from the health care, education and financial industries.

A new trove of heavily redacted documents provided by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF) on behalf of filmmaker Michael Moore and the National Lawyers Guild makes it increasingly evident that there was and is a nationally coordinated campaign to disrupt and crush the Occupy Movement.
The new documents, which PCJF National Director Mara Verheyden-Hilliard insists “are likely only a subset of responsive materials,” in the possession of federal law enforcement …

America welcomes a new brand of smart street lightning systems: energy-efficient, long-lasting, complete with LED screens to show ads. They can also spy on citizens in a way George Orwell would not have imagined in his worst nightmare.
With a price tag of $3,000+ apiece, according to an ABC report, the street lights are now being rolled out in Detroit, Chicago and Pittsburgh, and may soon mushroom all across the country.
Part of the Intellistreets systems made by the company Illuminating Concepts, they have a number of “homeland security applications” attached.
Each has …

British prosecutors accused former Rupert Murdoch aide Rebekah Brooks and five others of obstructing justice Tuesday in the first criminal charges from the News of the World phone hacking scandal.
The ex-News International (NI) chief executive, her husband Charlie Brooks and four people who worked for her were charged with trying to hide evidence from police investigating wrongdoing at the now-closed tabloid.
Brooks, 43, and her husband, 49, who is a former racehorse trainer and schoolfriend of Prime Minister David Cameron, said the decision was “weak and unjust”.
Senior prosecutor Alison Levitt said in a television statement that there was “sufficient evidence for …

(Reuters) – For all the derision Republican presidential hopefuls have heaped on the Federal Reserve, a November win by lead contender Mitt Romney would likely change little at the central bank, at least in the short term.
That might seem surprising, given the unprecedented barrage of criticism levied this campaign season at Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, whose aggressive efforts to support the economy have sparked accusations that he is setting the table for future inflation.
Texas Governor Rick Perry, who has since dropped out of the race, called Bernanke’s policies “treasonous.” Former …

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) showed no signs of holding back her sentiments on Florida’s “Stand our Ground” laws Sunday morning, slamming the legislation in the midst of the Trayvon Martin shooting.
Maloney appeared on MSNBC’s Up with Chris Hayes and expressed her fears over the law.
“I would call these laws ‘Kill at will,’” she said. “I think they should be brought back across the country. I should not be armed walking the streets. I think that the basic question is what do we do about it, to prevent it in the …

Poland CIA Prisions

WARSAW, Poland — For years, the notion that Poland could allow the CIA to operate a secret prison in a remote lake region was treated as a crackpot idea by the country’s politicians, journalists and the public.
A heated political debate this week reveals how dramatically the narrative has changed.
In a string of revelations and political statements, Polish leaders have come closer than ever to acknowledging that the United States ran a secret interrogation facility for terror suspects in 2002 and 2003 in the Eastern European country.
Some officials recall the fear …

A Roman Catholic priest in Montana has been charged with felony sexual abuse of children after sexual images of naked children were found on his Nintendo DS gaming console and personal computer.
The Missoulian reported that a woman called authorities last October to report that nude images of young boys were found on a Nintendo DS game console she purchased from Rudolph “Rudy” Carl Bullman, 67, who serves as a priest at Risen Christ Parish in Kalispell.

Craig Monteilh says he did not balk when his FBI handlers gave him the OK to have sex with the Muslim women his undercover operation was targeting. Nor, at the time, did he shy away from recording their pillow talk.
“They said, if it would enhance the intelligence, go ahead and have sex. So I did,” Monteilh told the Guardian as he described his year as a confidential FBI informant sent on a secret mission to infiltrate southern Californian mosques.
It is an astonishing admission that goes that goes to the heart …

High-tech: Samsung's latest sets feature built-in HD cameras, microphone sets and face and speech recognition software

Samsung’s latest breed of plasmas and HDTVs may allow hackers, or even the company itself, to see and hear you and your family, and collect extremely personal data.
The new models, which are closer than ever to personal computers, offer high-tech features that have previously been unavailable, including a built-in HD camera, microphone set and face and speech recognition software.
This software allows Samsung to recognise who is viewing the TV and personalises each person’s experience accordingly. The TV also listens and responds to specific voice commands.
But some critics have suggested that …

Unlike the other GOP presidential candidates remaining in the race, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) explained Monday on NBC’s The Tonight Show why he doesn’t want Secret Service protection.
“It’s a form of welfare, having tax payers pay to take care of somebody,” he said. “I’m an ordinary citizen and I would think I should pay for my own protection.”
Jay Leno then played a clip of a kung fu movie in which the congressman’s head replaced a successful fighter’s, showing why he doesn’t need Secret Service protection.
Paul cited the exorbitant cost, estimating …

Occupy Wall Street protesters

A protest to mark the six-month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement has resulted in clashes with police, dozens of arrests and complaints of excessive force.
Police appeared determined to send a signal that they will not tolerate any attempt to re-establish an Occupy camp at its birthplace in Zuccotti Park in New York.
But after a winter in which the Occupy movement has lost some momentum, protesters said they had wanted to mount a show of renewed strength.
“This is our spring offensive,” Michael Premo, 30, of New York, told Reuters. …
